Friend wants and older jeep cherokee, what says the brotherhood?

and not to sound stupid but if we have a cherokee with a d35/chrystler8.25" would a d44 from a cherokee be a direct bolt in?

yes;
Dana 35 non c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 84-89
Dana 35 c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 90-01
Chrysler 8.25 - 27 spline, 1.17" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 91-96
Chrysler 8.25 - 29 spline, 1.21" diameter shafts, 8.25" ring gear, 3" axle tube - used 97-01
Dana 44 non c-clip - 30 spline, 1.31" diameter shafts, 8.5" ring gear, 2.75" axle tube - used 87-89 on some(not all) XJs equipped with towing package.

gearing
3.07 - used with 4.0L engine / manual transmission
3.31 - only available on older (pre87?) 2 door XJs with "Fuel Economy" package
3.55 - used with 4.0L engine / automatic transmission
3.73 - found in some XJs with the towing package
4.10 - used with 2.5L engine usually, and older XJs with the "Off-Highway Vehicle" package.
4.56 - rare but can be found on some older (~ 89 ~) models with 2.5L engine and auto transmission

a couple of weeks ago; i traded a dana 35 with 3.55's to a guy with a dana 44 tow package rear with 3.73's because he wanted to match his front axle gearing.

the front is a high pinion dana 30; which actually usually holds up quite well.

the yj wranglers came with leaf springs front and rear, the tj had coils.
here is my yj (along with a couple of my k5's) :D

The axles are the easy part, since you can find/swap readily. I would recommend you look for a '91 and up to get the HO 4.0L, better cooling system, and non-CAD HP D30 up front. Those often have the Chrysler 8.25 rear anyway. Also look for a NP231 case (most common), as some of them have an NP242, and there's very little avail for those aftermarket. Mine's a '93 with D30 and 8.25 (Powertrax locker), running 33's on a 4" lift and generous trimming. It does really well, but I definitely recommend the added reinforcements on the unibody if he's gonna beat on it. I've pounded the hell out of mine w/o plating the frame, and the body is developing a lot of cracks.:doah:

IM assembling parts for my '94 cherokee as well. Never wheeled one that was modified, but there is a huge following. The 4.0's run forever, and they get pretty decent milage for the power they make. I'm building mine as an "expedition" rig. Good luck with it!

well ive been trying to get him to go chevy (got a 92 bronco now) but he only likes the k series shorty truck, dosnt like k5 or standard beds, cant find shorties here..

so whats not bolt in about it? we cant fab or weld so moving axle purches is out? Is thats what needed? he mentioned the tj rubicon with 44s, if we managed to find that would it be bolt in or would the perches need to be moved as well? Thanks guys

I am talking about an up grade for the front axle.

Any Off road shop or welding shop should be able to weld on the perches for you for 50 bucks or so

a front rubicon tj is a bolt in axle; however it is not the same as the dana 44 under our trucks. the rear is not the same as the xj uses leaf springs and the tj coils.
