I just changed the front axle seals of my 10 bolt axle out of a 3/4 ton suburban and don't know the torque setting for the differential bearing caps (4 bolts). I've looked in my Hayes manual and just can't seem to find it.

I basically pulled the whole carrier out, replaced the axle seals and have now put it back together.....just missing the torque setting.

Thanks! :waytogo:

I found a thread that said 85 so still up in the air just a bit.....I'll keep researching but it looks like it's in this 70-85 range.

If we are talking the 4 bolts connecting the Bearing Cap to the Steering Knuckle... The 87 Service Manual says:

Tighten 4 Bolts alternately and evenly to 108 N-m (80 Ft Lbs)

I wouldnt consider a 7/16ths bolt to be very small...

I agree. I was kinda comparing it to a 60 or 14b in my head.

He is talking about the main cap bolts for the diff carrier

Cool! I went with 60 and I actually just finished swapping in the new axle. Everything went smooth with the exception of the tie-rod end got stripped. It looks like it's sealed so I may have to get a whole new rod.....dang!

However, long story short. I swapped in a 14 bolt SF axle from a 3/4 ton suburban and ended up using a small spacer and the smaller, 6 lug brakes and axle shaft. Worked out great and now I have 4.10 gears too!

Oh, one last thing. Someone mentioned locktite on those carrier bolts. Is that necessary? Seems like it wouldn't grab too well anyways because of the gear oil in there.

I bet it worked OK...:waytogo: Was wondering when I'd hear from ya.

Yea, a little tired over the past few weeks! Wife and kids went to Florida so I had time for the rear. Had the e-locker installed, used the spacers and swapped it in. I've been driving it for a week and it's great!

Decided to do the front axle today and got it in with the exception to the tie rod ends. But, I dug in my receipts and found out I bought it from Autozone and it has a lifetime warranty! Sweet!

I'll post up some pics later but they look just like yours. Nice and clean!

I was kinda watching your progress. I had no email or PMs so I guessed everything went as I said it would. Glad it went smooth!

Yea, I was going to shoot you an email but my phone didn't find it.....

Anyways, appreciate all the help! I stuck with the larger studs in the back and the stock ones in front. May change later.
