front 10b and 38\'s???

I am wanting to get 38"s and I know the rear 10b wont stand up so I am swapping in the 14b but I cant really afford a dana 60 so will the 10b be able to hold up to 38"s??
Thanks

convert it to 8 lug /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

He could convert to 8 lug to make wheel shopping easier but it wont make the 10 bolt an ounce stronger..

Re: front 10b and 38\'s???

In order to match his rims with the 14bff, he will have to do that unless he gets a d60.

I didn't say anything about strength

Re: front 10b and 38\'s???

What kind of tires are you getting? If you get something like a TSL with LOTS of grip/traction, you will be more prone to breaking an axle because all the leverage the tire is putting on the axle. If you don't wheel hard you could probably get away with it

Re: front 10b and 38\'s???

maybe like IROKs with the lightest forged AL rim money can buy... and good aftermarket shafts/joints...

oh, and no hardcore rocks or heavy right foot action either...

Yeah ya gotta watch it. I was playin in some mud down on the beach last night.. something went bang haven't taken anything apart yet. U-joint is fine, and the diff is OK, but either the hub or the stub shaft is gone. Will post pics tomorrow. I'm runnin 37" SSR's with an 8 lug 10b front

Re: front 10b and 38\'s???

it all depends on how hard you are on it. if you use lots of the skinny petal then it WONT hold up but if you use some fines to get up and over things you can make it work for a while

Mine didn't even last that long......I broke my 10 bolt twice before I ever even went and played in the rocks.

38s + 10 bolt = failure 50% of my wheelin' trips.

Re: front 10b and 38\'s???

So far I run the same set up for the same reason, the dana 60 is just too freaking expensive. Anyway, I try to take it easy on the front 10b but there are times when I have to really dog it as well, I think as long as you don't wheel like a maneak and only really get on it when you have to you should be fine. Mine has held up for over a year now.

[/ QUOTE ] I think back spacing and how wide your wheels are come into play also.

Re: front 10b and 38\'s???

I'm running an '89 Jimmy w/ a 10b front, a tru-trac posi and 38.5s. I've done a good bit of mud & trail riding and haven't had any problems, but I've also been careful not to push it. I do, however, have a D60 I'm putting together to replace the 10b. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Re: front 10b and 38\'s???

There's a kid locally that runs a 10 bolt 12 bolt in his Jimmy and runs 38x12.5 TSL's and hasn't broken anything yet. He's been running that setup for a few years. Granted he only has a limited slip in the rear and the front is open.

Re: front 10b and 38\'s???

I have never had anything larger than a 10 bolt or d44 in the front and have run up to 40's without a problem. I only drive in the mud though (no rocks) with a tired small block and open differential. My friend broke a u-joint on a d44 axleshaft once, but the joint had been dry for quite a while and didn't even have any needles left in it. It seems like when parts are in good condition they tend to stay together better. I use the the greasable spicer joints in my axleshafts so I can "push" the water from them.

they aint cheap, believe me I had to save pennies for a while to get mine... but in the long run if you really plan on wheelin ur rig, the d60 is cheaper. Replacing busted 10b shafts, joints, hubs, etc etc every trip out gets $pendy eventually...

[/ QUOTE ]hell thats what mine was to but w/ 35s [darn] the 10 bolt save for a dana 60 but if you want the 8 lug conversion I have one for sale

Re: front 10b and 38\'s???

I run 36" Iroks(mind you they are as big as my friends 38.5" TSL SX's), with an ARB and a stock front axle with 5-760x joints and warn hubs with lots of rocks and skinny pedal and havent broken a thing. front 10 bolts are under-rated, especially if you know how to drive right.
