Front axel U-joints

I was wondering the level of difficulty on replacing the front u-joint as I beleive I have a bad one. Does the axels just pull out of the front punkin or do you have to remove the cover and remove the clips? Also I have a loose lower ball joint that I think I might as well tackel while I am in there.

No the diff cover does not need to come off
