looking for a link. got chocolate milk in gear oil. want to remove differentail for cleaning, check bearing, and replace seals. some directions would be good so i dont do something stupid. looks easy but i'm not sure.

thanks

Wow not sure about that tool, how it works or how to get one

Do you mean the case-spreader?
It widens the axle housing for easier installation and removal of the carrier.
But you probably won't need it for removal.
And when you install the carrier again, you can just use a big dead blow hammer instead, to get it in with a proper bearing preload.

I wouldn't disable the whole thing. You can get it clean with brake or carb cleaner. Just clean one side and rotate The gears and get The other side. Let it dry out for a couple hours and seal it back as fill it. I'd check the gears real good while You are in there. They Could be bad now depending on how long you have has it running around in there. If you are worried about it you have to Take everything off the knuckle to get the axle shafts out of both sides and then pull the bearing caps on the carrier bearings. Make sure to mark which side they came off of and also the upper and lower bolt location so
They can go Back the same way they came off. Then pull the carrier out. I used a pry bar and mine popped right out. Make sure Not to drop it on your arm or ground. It weighs a good amount. Check out the tech section on the main Page here for the 1/2 to 3/4 ton conversion and that will show you how to get the knuckles free to Pop out the axleshafts.
I've done this many times after Water crossings and it gets Easier every time. Just take everything off and set It On a clean towel in the order it Came off to get it back together easier.

I had to take mine completely apart to get out all the mud mixed with gear oil from the previous owner. It had formed a sticky mess that brake cleaner was not addressing. The spreader is not necessary, a careful prybar will get it out, and a couple hits with the deadblow hammer will get it back in, as long as you have everything squared up. I had removed the bearing caps from mine before removing the knuckles, and found that the severe beating I had to lay on knuckles to get them to separate had jarred the carrier loose. I found WD-40 was helpful in displacing water and mud that had gotten into the bearings.

If you are removing the axle seals, a long pvc pipe of the approximate inner tube diameter will make dislodging them easier. It will also ease alignment and prevent damaging the seals as you insert the shafts. I'd recommend leaving them alone unless they are leaking.

it wasnt leaking anywhere not sure how it got in there. i'm currently replacing the ball joints thats when i found chocolate milk also has a bad u-joint n bearing on the shaft. i'll try to get to it saturday, open it up, clean it and check it. guess i should do that before i buy any parts, just in case. thanks for your help
