I was talking with a guy who says he was looking at a front D44 with a factory gov bomb in it. Didn't happen right?....only factory limited slip/locking diff I've ever heard of was a Powerlok in a Military 60?
Or is there a rare (he says 8%) G80 locking front D44 in a 78??????

Your number one hint is that it's in a D44, Eaton only made the G80 for GM corporate axles (10, 12, 14 bolt etc).

And no, GM never put Gov-loks in the front.

Also the Powerlock was never in the front on a D60, it was a Tracklock which does not grab near as hard as a Powerlock. I have ran both in the front and currently run a Powerlock in the front.

Good, I'll pass it on....The guy had him convinced it was factory....

From the Dana site, last GM that I found that got a factory posi or whatever you want to to call it was 73 or 74. Ford was in the early 80s. Military was different with there stuff.

Not factory. The only factory front posi was in the M trucks which was the Tracklock. The Powerlock was factory in Mopar D60 rears and was called the Sure Grip Posi. My 68 R/T Charger had that option.

How 'bout this? A posi unit from a rear 8.5" 10b, whether clutch type/trutrac/G80/locker/spool/whatever, will it bolt into a 10b front? Or does the 10b front use a specific carrier?

It'll go in the front no problem, it just doesn't work as well as it should in the rear, I've tried it, it sucks. (tried the Gov-Loc that is)

This is a D44 front, not a 10b.

understood, but 496truck was asking about the 10 bolt stuff real quick, and i had experience with the Gov-Loc in a front 10 bolt diff, so i answered the question from my personal experience. :D

I was thinking about putting a Gov-lock in my front 10b for a long time. Then I realized they don't lock very well in reverse, which is how it would run up front. Is this the sucking you're talking about?

But a clutch-type posi should work fine in either end. Can't you swap carriers between front and rear D44 axles like you can with 10bs? Then a factory rear posi could be swapped into the front and cause this confusion.

The confusion was that he saw pics of a factory gov/bomb in the front D44....just didn't happen, but the seller tried to make him believe it was factory.

.

kinda sorta, they do work in the front, but what happens, is the weight setup that activates the locking mechanism, only works when there is sufficient wheel spin, so one wheel starts spinning, and then it locks in with alittle more force than i preferred with 10 bolt stock shafts :p:

I don't believe there is any difference in the way a Gov-lock works in either reverse or forward??? I've had 3 trucks that run the whole gauntlet of offerings from an '83 S-10, '90 K5, to an '03 2500HD with a factory Gov-lock and never noticed any difference in operation between forward and reverse.

Correct, the G80 works in either direction up to about 20 mph, if a difference of 100 rpm is sensed between each axleshaft.
