Front Axle?

Hey Guys,

I have an 87 Chavy with a GM D60 with 4.10's in the front of it. The axle needs to have a good once over (Bearings and king pins) and I'm not really sure the 4.10's will appreciate the 39.5" Rockers I have waiting to go on. This winter I had planned on welding the front up with 4.10's.

I also have a 78 Ford HPD60 sitting in my garage that's in a little worse shape then the GM one. The HPD60 is meant for my future project to go into my TJ. ARB and 5.38's are my goal for that axle.

So I'm wondering how many people out there are running Ford 60's in the front of their 70-80's Chevy's? I know it would take some work but I don't really want to spend half the money to bring the GM 60 up to standard just to run it especially if I'm not happy with the 4.10's.

Any thoughts and opinions would greatly be appreciated!

prolly not the best response you gunna git, but ill throw in my ten cents.
i dont think yer gunna have too many peoples runnin the ford 60 unless it was a SAS, only gm and dodge 60's are gunna be the common swap for a 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton front end, and i believe its due to the pumpkin being located on opposite side.
welding front end? really?
and i have run 4.10's with 40's b4 and it wasnt all that bad on the trails, got 4.56's now and a little better, still not optimum, but dont think 4.10's would hold ya back from hittin the trails:waytogo:
sure yer bearing are shot??
kpins are super easy and worth the rebuild.

dont waste that 78 HP60 on a tj. use the 80s ford 60 instead.
put the 78 60 in the 73-87, it practically bolts in. gm 203 ford 205 doubler.

I ran 4.10's and 39.5s for several years. As said, not optimal - but I would rather wheel alittle under powered than not at all. Now i run 5.13s and its like night and day, still a little high - but works very well.

The only reason I would run the Ford 60 is to take advantage of the HP. If your going doubler or have another transfercase in mind it would make things easier. If not, you should start thinking about it.

If you go Ford what are your plans for the rear ring/pinion? If you already plan to re-gear the rear, why not re-gear the gm60 also? Bearings and king pins are easy, gears - not so much.

You said the f60 was in worse shape, in what way?

Why go with an 80's Ford 60 in the TJ???
If I plan on still using coils in the TJ then this 78 HPD60 would be the best choice...

The GM D60 had been sitting under the truck for almost 8 years with extremely minimal use. I figured I might as well replace th bearings when I do the king pins which have play. The rear 14 bolt is currently match geared to 4.10's as the front.

The Ford HPD60 has been sitting behind someones shed for a very long time... U joints, king pins and bearings are probably a start. I would like to put 5.38's in it so then I can use it in the future with my 6 cyl Jeep and not have to re-gear it down the road. One of my concerns is that the 5.38's will be too deep...
