Hey guys

91 3/4 ton 10 bolt front in my burb.

Who buys what where for front brake parts? The reman calipers i got from kragen suck, one has a different sized bleed screw on it, and i'm not totally sure they even gave me the correct calipers. Pulls bad to one side, and has un-evenly worn the pads.

Getting ready to redo the front end, including brakes, TRE's, etc.

Is there a source for New (not reman) calipers?

Also, how is the hub/rotor setup? I've torn them apart before, but never broke down hub/rotor. Do most of you guys replace the whole unit, or do you just remove the rotor from the hub?

Is the hub/rotor held together by just the wheel studs, or more? Thinking it may be worth just doing the whole deal at once.

Thanks!

I am getting the parts together for mine as well. I had planned on just splitting the rotor from the hub, replacing the bearings, etc. while I was in there and resurfacing the rotors. I just did the wifes 4Runner and it has 180K on it, I just replaced the rotors with some mid level stuff from RockAuto, with the logic that 180K is more than I could expect stock rotors to last. Those were good, no issues, fit, finish, quality, etc. were all good. I really think I am going to go ahead and replace the rotors on the Jimmy as well rather than having them re surfaced. Heck only 2 places in town re surface them now and it will cost me about 1/2 to resurface what it would cost me to just replace them with no worries.

Interested to see what others have done, and have to say. I know I am going to RockAuto to get mine. Get just about all of my auto parts from there if I can afford to wait a couple of days.

If you're in Ptown, and not Davis, I like Monument Car Parts on Santa Rita. They're a local mini-chain whose HQ is up here in Pacheco, and they've generally had good stuff. They do a lot of wholesale business as well as retail, and I figure they're doing well if they sell to the shops, who do NOT want comebacks.

That said, I know they used to sell Raybestos, but I donno who they have lately.

On the hub, IIRC they're only held on by the studs, so I'd remove it (*), clean it real good, and reuse it if the inside bearing surface isn't scarred.

(*) Use a press. Use A Press. USE A PRESS! Banging them out with a hammer or pulling them up with an impact and washes is chicken-poo. If you don't have a press, Scott's got one, I can do it, whatever.

I have had good luck with my Napa reman calipers. No uneven wearing, but I did replace them both at the same time.

Press the studs out and replace the rotor, unless the hub is damaged. The bearing races in the hub can be pressed out and replaced, and typically there isn't much else to go wrong with the hub unit.

From the factory these things pulled to one side. There was a review of an 88 Blazer when it was new, and the reviewer noted the pull. Even after replacing all my front end wear parts, it still pulls to the right a bit.
