So usually I just do something, then I read something in a forum later and wish I would of asked for advice. The attached pictures show my front suspension bump stops proposed location. Probably should give a little info first. 56" front springs, front eyes moved 4" forward, 6" shackles. I picked up all 4 corners with a forklift to see what kind of compression and droop I had. Pretty typical #s from what I've read. Front compresses 4" and extends 6.5" from ride height. I realize that in real world it will compress and droop more. So I will run into issues with pitman arm to leaf pack and cross member to spring pad at a little over 5.5" of compression. My thinking is to set the bumps shown at 3" off the pads. I'm guessing that these bumps look like they would compress about 2.5"? Ive also got a set of poly bumps that are shorter but was thinking these longer ones might stop better?

I'm just guessing here any advice on past experience would be appreciated. This rig is just a trail truck. Nothing really high speed.

Are you setting bumps to keep things from hitting or to keep the springs alive? Two different things, you don't hear people talk much about 52's/56's and that second thing.

Both I guess? To me it looks like I could crash the pitman arm into the leaf pack if I didn't have stops. I still have the factory overload leaf in the pack which I was thinking about flipping over someday?

I have 52s up front and set my bumps to make contact about 1/2" before the springs are flat. I am using OEM rubber stops just spaced down from the factory bracket. All of our stuff is fairly low speed. If I went faster through rough stuff I would space them down another 1/2" or so to compensate for "squish". I killed my first set of 52s fast by over flexing them.
