Hey all ~ I'm in the process of finally finishing my D60 refresh project w/ a set of Chromo axels + 35spl outers.

Do you all add the stub shaft dust shields? New axels don't come with them, so got me thinking if they are even needed or spend a few bucks more and get a set to install....?

I plan on inner axel seal replacement as well...

Any other things to consider while I have the D60 apart?

Opinions please

Thanks
Burt

Thanks for the reply.. been searching U tube and not much, but looks like most move the old dust shield to the new axels. Then the rubber spindle seal..

tap off the old and transfer to new .

look in to the newer ford inner seals over stock style . harder to install but well worth it . https://www.amazon.com/AXLE-INNER-TUBE-SEAL-UPGRADED/dp/B075RRYPC5

new springs for the king pin uppers if your this far torn down and some new upper bushings . otherwise grease it all up with lucus red & tacky grease and be done .

Thanks! I have WFO crossover/highsteer arms ontop my kingpins so good to go there :thumb:
Yeah those seals look beefy... I already have a set of the org... hmmmm

Thanks again ALL :saweet:

Another thing I found was "outer" axel tube "plugs" with a hole obviously for the axle shaft ...?? Looks like it may be a "jeep" product.
"Keeps mud, sand and water from entering the the axel tube via the open steering knuckle"

Seems kinda gimmekey at best...? Or is it?
I have been out of touch with the current innovations out there, so just though I would check on this one...??
Thoughts?

ok SO.... good bad ugly ??? seems logical if yer in the muck allot.... I'm thinking I'm NOT in the muck practically at all.. a 15/30 sec river crossing at best...

I just used one in a pinch to seal up the axle tube and not have to tear the entire axle down to replace the inner seal. I used a dremel and cleaned up the axle tube, right stuff the hell out of the outside and installed it. Then polished the area the seal would ride on the axle shaft and packed the seal with grease then inserted axle shaft. It survived a full trip to Moab and isn't looking like it wants to leak so must be ok.

They do help if you do a lot of creek crossings and are in muddy crap a lot. So it's not a jeep gimic but also not 100% needed.
