front diff cover gaskets

Are the front and rear 10 bolt cover gaskets the same shape? or are they different? Im gonna call orileys in the morning but im pretty sure they are different. Got my front 4.10s installed and they came out perfect, even using the stock pinion shim and cast carrier shims, talk about luck!

Also, need to decide if I should paint them bright yellow with a big ol' smiley face.

so ive decided to do the smiley face, gonna be pretty simple, planning to have the smiley wearing aviators since thats the only shades I wear. That or i was also thinking skull and open/box wrenches like my desktop, but figured that would be better suited on a d60/14b.

first two are my inspiration, im thinking with the aviators and basic smile its too potheadish, so i think the teeth will add to it. Girlfriend thought the missing teeth was too hickish though :D

I may try to get the covers cleaned up and media blasted tomorrow. and pick up some bright yellow tractor paint (Tough stuff!) or maybe some of that rustoleum you get from ace hardware if they have bright-ass yellow in stock.

most places dont stock them. just sell ya tube of black rtv. fine to do but must be dry and DONT use a TON and fill the bolt holes with rtv on install like lots of people do. :doah:

and yellow smiley is best on eaton ho52/72 diffs and jeep amc 20 rears. full round shape.

i prefer the tounge hanging out the mouth off the side for smileys on diff covers.

safty yellow in rustoleum. and for best brightness brush it on. not spraycan. see my snow plow pic for yellow

I couldn't find a good example of tongue hanging out that I liked, gonna play around with it though. I'm not gonna be upset with an imperfect shape, maybe I should paint the tie rod too, but that may look tacky on a gray/red rig.
 
Last time I had a ten bolt cover off I could have sworn that it was shaped differently that the 8.5" ten bolt rear cover. Its been a few years so I may be wrong too.

The front 10b is different in that at about the 1 o'clock position it dips in towards the center, where as the rear is just round. This makes the covers and gaskets different. Not to mention the front diff cover needs to have a fill hole in it.

x2 on the RTV black. Buy one tube and get lots of gaskets out of it.
 
dad swears by gaskets as i said earlier, I know rtv works, but I havent had a problem using a gasket on anything so far. If it starts leaking ill probably take it off and rtv it. Gaskets were like 3 dollars a piece so no loss.
 
I've done w/gasket and wo/gasket recently. The one without has to be redone.:dunno: Done it that way a couple of times before and it worked. Never had one with a gasket leak yet though:waytogo:
 
i just wish it hadnt been 100+ for the last week, i wanna feel what these 4.10s make that skinny petal do!

I can only work on it after 4, and its still hot. been busy moving the girls sister as well, and hanging out with the guys and working. But axles just about ready to go back in! just needs shafts installed, then straighten the backing plates a little, but ill wait to install backing plates and rotors till its in the truck.


Theres a seal on the spindle for these 10 bolts right? I think I need to get a replacement for them because the one i had came in 2 pieces. Where the inner bearing rides.
 
Lower ball joint on the driver side is bad, gotta replace that. Got the steering arm off, ended up welding the nut to the stud and backing it off and bought ord's arp stud kit.

Ended up using john deere ag yellow.
