My mechanic told me that I needed a new front drive shaft, I don't want to get one custom made, I do not four wheel all that often and don't need a high dollar custom built drive shaft. I would like to find a used one off of a different vehicle that will fit. I have an 84 blazer with a four in lift(blocks and springs) and what looks like a three inch body lift. I got links to pictures since I cannot post attachment. If anybody knows one that will work please let me know I have a few scrap yards around me.

why did he say you needed a new one?

Just get another stock blazer one if yours has issues, 4 inches isnt really to the point were the stock one loses its ability.

front drive line

I just looked on the work order from the shop, it says "front drive line damaged". Since it has a two piece driveline and one end goes into the other(smaller end into the larger end, and keep your minds out of the gutter) there is some play up and down where the two pieces meet. If you look at the picture in the previous post you could press on the driveline and move one section up(smaller diameter) and down in the larger section. hopefully you can follow that.

Yep, your slip joint is worn. The up and down motion is common with part time 4wd, because it normally is not under any torque load, and just sits in one place and bounces up and down.

You need to grab the two parts, and twist them back and forth in opposite directions. If there is a lot of slop that way, you may need a new slip joint. If its tight, it should be ok for occasional use. You might hear a slight rattle from time to time, just grease it and the rattle will go away.

If you drive on the highway with either the hubs engaged or disengaged with the truck in 4wd, you will feel a vibration.

But for light duty occasional use, a small amount of twist slop is not going to be a problem for quite a while.

Check in your area for a driveshaft shop. The slip joint can be replaced with a machine shop setup.

Don't know about the price difference between a new one and a new slip joint.

Honestly if you dont use it much and its not severely bad just grease it.

I agree. Dont worry much about it, especially in a truck that doesnt see much 4 wheel usage. If you are concerned though Im certain you can find a d shaft in another truck at the junk yard for less than 50 bucks.
