Hey all,
I lifted my truck a while back and had to disconnect my front driveshaft at the axle to change the u-joint. Now it is like an inch too short and won't reach the yoke. I have tried really hard to get some extension out of that driveshaft with grease, pb blaster, and the torch. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if I need to do some other sort of mod to get this to connect. The truck is running a 4 inch lift. Do I need an extended driveshaft or shims in the axle or something I'm not aware of? Its really a pain driving in the snow in 2wd, so I would love to get this fixed soon. Oh, I have access to every tool imagineable in shop class so all ideas are possible.
Thanks,
Greg

Sounds like the slip might be stuck. Can you move the slip yoke? If not then you will need to visit your local driveline shop and have them repair the frozen slip yoke and maybe even extend the driveshaft. Every truck is different and so the requirement of needing the driveshaft extended is also on a "by need basis". FWIW, i'm running a 6" front spring and still able to use the factory front shaft without any problems. With only 4" of lift you're probably ok but just have a frozen slip that needs attention.

have u loosened the ring that hold on the bushing on the small female part of the driveshaft? if u spin that off it will be a lot easier to get the driveshaft apart.

x2

sometimes them driveshafts after 20 years of driving and offroading get so full of crap, unscrew that ring, tear it in half and clean and grease it

I'm assuming you mean the small front part of the driveshaft where the grease fitting is when you talk about the small female ring? Also, I do believe the slip yoke is frozen, I'll try to heat that guy up and give it a tug tomorrow in shop.

ya, its a little hollow nut that has lines on it, its the last thing on the small female part of the driveshaft. it has lines going with the driveshaft, clean it all off in a parts bin if they have one or any de greaser.and if u cant get it off with ur hands, try some channel locks.

Ok I will try getting that cleaned up in the parts washer tomorrow. Thanks for all the help by the way. It just sucks that I only have 45 minutes in that class.

I had the same problem, actually fixed it in shop class too. Don't be afraid to bust out the bfh and beat on it. Mine took like 5 min of beating then in came off, damn that sounds dirty...

Aint that a cap? anyway

the inner splines of the shaft have a guide spline so dont get frustrated when putting them back together, i did  just keep turning and trying.

Spray some PB Blaster in it a couple times a day for a week. Then try. Makes it easier.

Us MI guys get to know these tricks real fast once you start working on older vehicles. Gotta love rust!
