I pulled a front driveshaft from the junkyard. Today I am changing all the U joints.

What are the little plastic pins on the sides and do I need to remove them to press out the U joint?:dunno:

have to heat up and melt out.

take torch and heat up around caps and dont get crazy with heat.

when heat correct caps will POP out and spew rest of plastic out. and also HUGE stinky job do outside not in a garage.

when done with all joints let whole thing cool off and do ujoints like normal.

when all out clean flats were new u-joint clips will sit like normal with a file to give good clean surface to sit clip on.

also take and remove rest of plastic from inside yokes were caps sit.

otherwise your all good.

Do I need to put something back in the hole when I'm done?

How would you fix that on a trail if you broke one?

Never really thought about it....But I wonder how they go about installing these at the factory?

you will bend yokes before moving with any press. heat/smoke out only.

I actually beat some out with the hammer/large socket once without destroying the yokes. Dont know how, guess I got lucky.

That was back in my early days of ck5. I figured out like a weel later that all I had to do was heat it up:doah: Ive done several since then and it is a whole lot easier now that I know.

They put the caps in with it in a jig that exactly centers the cross in the shaft. There are grooves in the cap and in the yoke that line up with the holes.
Then, they inject hot plastic in the holes under pressure and it fills up the grooves and locks them in place.

I have NEVER used heat of any sort to remove the factory poured plastic retention u-joints. I have always used my u-joint tool, vise, and BFH and have yet to even come close to damaging a yoke, then again i've been doing it this way for 30 years.

What is this U-joint tool you speak of? :dunno:

Like this...U-joint press.jpg

I've done quite a few u-joints in a bench press and those with injected plastic still needed heat sometimes--the yokes would crush or spread before the plastic wanted to shear at room temperature..a little torching and the stuff melts right out--also dont point that hole at your arms, the plastic can squirt out and burn the f*** out of your arms or hands !..

try it with heat, maybe you'll like it?
I've only messed with ball joints and axle shaft joints. But I'd rather pay a little to just have them done. So much easier :D
