I noticed my front driveshaft had play in it today while underneath my truck. I took it off and proceeded replace the ujoints. well theres a cup and a ball that joins the large coupler and the drivshaft, and it has some play in it. I assume this means I will need a new driveshaft, or will I be fine if I just replace the u-joints ?

You can buy CV rebuild kits, although places like Napa have a hard time figuring out their computer systems, they try to pull u-joints all the time.

I got my CV rebuild from Napa. I think the kit was called a "Double cardigan(sp) service kit. It was like $60 and came with the seal, spring and the 3 bearing pieces. It may have had the ball too, I can't rember it was a couple of years ago when I did it.

Around here Napa are the best. Advance Auto/Autozone always try to sell me the wrong part.

Yeah, they include the ball. What they don't include is the cup, which sucks because they are often pretty hashed and need to be replaced.

yeah, I ws reading up on it last night.
I am going to a junkyard tomorrow, I will see what they have that might be cheaper.

The only problem there is that any junkyard shaft is likely to be as wore out as the one you are replacing. The CV's need to be periodically greased, but nobody ever does, so any you find will likely be in questionable shape...

The last time I bought a NAPA kit it was $35 or so. If you need teh cup you can get it from a local driveshaft shop. They're easy to rebuild, and as long as you take care of it it will last quite a while :wink1:

I was thinking that would be my next route, then another member down the road from me has one already rebuilt for a great price, thats where I am headed:D
