I just installed new inner fenders to replace the rusted ones and would like to restore the splash shield while I'm into it. I just want to freshen them up a bit by spraying them black. I need suggestions on what type of paint to use. They appear to be made of an asphault shingle type of material. They where spray painted with regular black paint before but since it is not flexible it chipped and cracked up. I sanded all that old paint off and they are ready for a light coat of black. I was thinking some type of vinyl/plastic/fabric paint? Any ideas?

Painting rubber doesn't usually work too good. How about a sandblaster? If you're set on spraying them, I would go with rubberized undercoating. From the pics, yours don't look too bad, but for those that do, some used inner-tubes or heavy material could work as replacements, using the originals as templates. Or I believe you can still order replacements from LMC or Classic Parts or somebody.

They do sell replacements and I got new ones for my "pretty" K5. These are going on my other K5 that is not so pretty. I don't think they are rubber...seem more like asphalt based. Might try to sandblast them to see if they look nicer. I used a angle grinder disc to strip off the old paint so the finish is a bit rough now. Just want to even them out a bit. I'm thinking about trying Krylon Fusion Flat Black. Other option is I have some Duplicolor PastiDip. I sprayed the inner fenders with Duplicolor Bedliner Spray but I don't think that would be flexible enough for these.

I'd say rubberized undercoating would work,or maybe the paint used on plastic bumpers with flex agent in it...R-M used to sell an asphalt based chassis paint that would probably work well too,if its still available..
