Like the title says. Specifically 10bolt gears. I have read a lot and gotten a lot of wish, washy answers. Does anyone know for a fact if you can take rear 10bolt gears and put them in a front axle? Thank you.

I can tell you that I've done it. My front 4.88 served a previous life in the back of someone's race car. You move to main load on the coast side, but in normal applications the front sees less use than the rear and it's not an issue.

The other option is reverse cut gears, which didn't appear in stock GM applications.

Another input of confidence for ya - I started gear/differential work in the late eighties and if ya think about how many 8.5” 10B’s GM made and just how many red-necks we’re upgrading in ratios ( or just break’n R/P’s ) that equals a butt-load of axle builds in a carrier .
Also, worked at a performance speed shop and sold R/P sets in addition to direct hands on installation work - plus all the side work in the good ole boy community which was quite numerous down here in the south.
That being said, just like the fellas said up above, they are the same in our squares, part number listings installation kits and all - proceed with confidence.

Yup, I can confirm. When I swapped my lousy 2.73s out for 4.10s (back in 2001...holy cow) the front and rear Genuine Gear part numbers were the same. ( I got the the kit with the master install package from 4wp).

A front diff is also a good source of spider gears if you have an open rear diff since they've usually seen a lot less wear.
