I understand the idea behind mounting a winch on the back so if you get stuck you can pull yourself out the way you came.......but for the type of wheelin' I do that's rarely the case. On the trails we run the winches are rarely ever used because the truck is actually stuck (i.e. can't move backwards or forwards), they are used because you can't get over an obstacle on a trail so you can continue on. So the choices are either use the winch you pull you 5' over the obstancle and continue down the trail, or back all the way to the beginning.
I'm sitting here thinking and honestly can't remember any time I used the winch on my truck where I was completely stuck (like a mud hole, ruts, etc...). Not saying I've never gotten stuck in a mudhole, but these are almost always on flat ground and we've found it far easier and quicker to hook up a strap and give it a quick tug (good tow hooks on both trucks, a good 30' strap, and about a 10' full throttle run will outdo a winch in a fraction of the time). Winches are used when you are half-way up a 100 yard long rocky hill and you simply can't get another truck to you to pull.
