Front Shackle Hitting Frame. (Problem Fixed)

I finally got some time to get under my truck and take a close look at every thing. I think the problem may be with the left side front spring perch bushing. Even though the bushing looks good at a glance, and it is not very old, the right front spring eye appears to be hanging down and protruding out a bit, thus allowing the spring to shift backwards into the frame. The left side spring is tucked away inside it's front spring perch nice and tight. I will have to pull the left front spring eye out of the perch and inspect it for wear to the bushing, bushing sleeve, bushing bolt, and spring perch bushing bolt hole being wollowed out.

My truck does have the longer ORD 5" shackles. I measured the spring lengths, and they are both measuring in at 49" eye to eye. I did find out that I have two differently manufactured springs, which I never noticed before. Even though the old worn out sticker on them says they are the same Ruff Country part number.

ruff country is the first problem . . . in my opinion .

what is the measurements from bump stop bracket on frame to axle tube per side or something that is the same both sides to measure from . this will let you know if there is a spring sagging out .

I should measure that too. The truck does look like it is sitting level, but just because it looks that way does not mean it actually is.

just curious, are they Rough Country or Tuff Country?

a previous post said you exchanged the Skyjackers for Tuff Country. Tuff Country is usually regarded better than Rough Country.

btw, you don't still have the 8" Skyjacker springs do you?

Can the dually be driven to Sahara & Boulder Highway or needs a trailer / tow?

The springs are Tuff Country brand. I am going to keep the SkyJackers in case there is something wrong with the ones I got. The only problem with putting the SkyJackers back on is I have to redo some things on the rear as well, which is a lot of work I am not in the mood for right now.

The crashed dually is a little to tweaked to drive it that far. The truck does run. It would be some work to fire it again. it is missing things like oil in the engine, battery, starter, and you would need to use a large gas can for a fuel tank. The truck has not been started in over five years, but it would start if you really wanted it to. If you where dead set on getting to drive that far, it could, but it would be such a hassle that you might as well get a flat bed to tow it where ever you wanted in town.

I can take a look today or tomorrow. Message me when you're available I'll come look at it.

if you ever want to get rid of them, hit me up although shipping would be a killer

Take out you're front spring hanger bolts, Jack the truck up so the springs pop out of the hangers and run some 9/16" all thread or a piece or 9/16" round stock through both sets of hangers. That should tell you if one is shifter or not.

For the shackle hangers find a landmark on the frame rails like a body mount bracket or something and start taking exact measurements from both sides to see if they are the same.

That is an idea, if the problem ends up not being anything in the bushing area. From some of the measurements I have taken the front spring perches seem to be in proper alignment. Have you ever seen front spring perches get shifted around on their rivets?

them rivets and soft and can shift around .

if i have to bolt stuff down in place of rivets i use bolts with a smooth shank to fill the hole and add a washer per side to spread the load . then metal crimp nuts / stover nuts . NO lock washers .

the stock rivet holes are sloppy 3/8 but to tight for 7/16 . so drill them to 7/16 and be done with it .

After looking at my trucks front suspension some more, I have figured out that it is the leaf spring causing the problem. I took the measurement that sweetk30 suggested, and there was a 1/2" difference between the two springs ride height. I then took a floor jack and lifted my truck at the frame close to the spring eye and shackle that is having the problem. I lifted it up 1/2", in order for the ride heights to match, and the leaf spring eye and shackle then rotated out to the correct position it should be in from the frame. These Tuff Country leaf springs only have about 20,000 miles on them, thus I do not know if it is the spring is sacking out already, or if it is bad manufacturing tolerances.

You might check the rear springs as well. I've had a cracked leaf in the back look like a bad front spring. Getting the back level made the front level without ever turning a bolt up front.

I will check that out. Thanks.

I had this same problem this is what worked for me...buy a winch...follow me on this...you buy a winch and go wheeling..the winch causes you to wheel harder thus getting stuck. Your big fat buddy has to get out and pull the winch line..this relieves the extra stress on the right leaf spring and causes it to recover its lost springness. The line pulling also causes your fat buddy to lose weight which in turn helps the leaf spring and helps your buddy with the ladies. :waytogo:

I thought you only wheeled on the web?
