I replaced the rear studs with longer Dormans. Get to the front and they are different. I am sure I am not the first, so either my search skills are not very good or it is so simple that no one writes about it.

Either way, can someone lead me in the right direction.

I have a '87 K5 with original running gear and I am trying to mount up MT Sidebitter wheels and the thickness of the center of the wheel is too thick for a good bite on the stud.

Thanks

The easy solution is to remove 1 stud and then take it to your local parts store and tell them you need one with the same dimensions except xx amount longer.

Not trying to sound like a smart ass, but where do you think I got the longer studs that I installed in the rear? After getting the rear done and moving on to the front and realizing that the ones they gave me wouldn't work I then went back to Napa and asked for the correct ones for the front. All they had a listing for is the OEM studs for the front. Again, not trying to be a smart guy here, but I try to do my homework.

If you can get me the correct measurement of your existing stud and how much longer you need the stud i'll look it up for you in my parts book. I need to know knurl diameter, knurl length, stud diameter, stud length (what you actually need). A pic of your current stud would be very helpful as well. Front and rear studs are very different as i'm sure you already know because of how the front stud must go through the rotor and then press into the hub to hold the rotor.

look up the stock size and then look up what you want online. get the part # and take that to the parts store. there made by somebody, just not in their books. dont know about where your at but 'CAR QUEST' here has cross reference books for everything. if you have one of them around:dunno:

how much do they actually contact now

This should be it:

Type : Serrated Stud
Thread : 7/16-20
Knurl Dia. : .565"
Length : 1-3/4"
Shoulder Length : 7/8"

My guess it will need to be roughly 2-3/8"

Not sure which catalog it will be, but one of the ones here http://www.dormanproducts.com/dispstatichtml.aspx?PageName=HD_catalogs.html will have all the wheel studs in it.

Other than one-off stuff (race applications mainly) that is likely all you are going to find.

The fronts are a bear because of the way the rotor retains the stud. I have a feeling there aren't any out there due to the design. There is a 1/2" application that will work (what I did) but even that doesn't give you any more length as I recall.

That is the catalog that I used for the first ones that I bought and yes, there is no longer one in that catalog.

OK, wasn't sure if you browsed through that or not.

Honestly, I don't think you are going to find anything. Other than some 60's Chrysler junk that used 1/2" studs of the same style, I don't think any long 7/16" stuff is made for the front, by anyone. I looked, long story short, only wheel studs I could go with in the front were 7/16" or 1/2", and only had the single length in each.

How much "bite" do the lugnuts have now? I'm not advocating it, but in the absence of an alternative, my 1/2" studs are just slightly more than halfway into the lugnut. Without going 3/4 or 1 ton, I didn't see a reasonable alternative.

I found some lugs on Jegs that might work. I post up as soon as I get them.

Is the knurl offset? Since the rotor is what actually holds the stud in place, knurl biting into the hub IMO was a no-go.

Only reason I didn't like that idea was that you end up with the rotor having "slop" on the studs (hub has larger hole for stud shank than the knurl diameter that bites into the rotor), and I was worried about working the studs *if* the rotor shifted under braking.

I'll post up a pic tonight

I have the same rig and same problem. Did u ever find longer studs that work?

No, I went with a different lug that I am not real happy with. Billet specialities sells a shoulder with the tapper further in. Found them at Jegs or Summit, can't remember which. Just do a search for 7/16 x 20 with 60 degree.

I found some on ebay i am going to try. They are Dormans part no. 610-130. Should have them this Thursday, will let you know if they work.
