i have a 1987 jimmy that has a pretty healthy 383 in it. the previos owner destroyed 90% of the wiring throughout the truck so right now it has the old school holley projection system on it. im not a big fan of the projection and it cant stay tuned to save its life. would it be worth it to through a carb on there? i still have the factory throttle body and computer, just no wires to connect it. would the stock TBI flow enough for this engine? i just want to truck to finally run right.

when i checked into it before it was almost the same price to just buy the complete system again (close to $1,000 iirc) but then it was another $150 to $200 to make it a closed loop system.

If you dont wanna mess with the projection stuff anymore you could consider a custom tbi setup with a newer ecm. Or even a tbi Maf hybrid system that is fairly friendly with rough cams and head swaps. The system was developed by one of the guys over at thirdgen.org, he goes by dimented24x7. This is the system im gathering parts for now to fuel a healthy 350 vortec marine motor on nitrous should be about 375hp w/o n2o. The conversion parts will probably run u at minimum $500 possibly more ,but it is completely tune able with a labtop and outside air temp or altitude has very little effect on it. Plus its all factory so parts easily available.
If you want more info let me know.

Good luck

I am a Fan of fuel injection. But in your case I would just throw a good Quadra Jet carb on. Or mabe a Truck Avenger. With either one you will have to tune it for your engine.
Beings you said the wireing is pretty well hacked and you have a healthy 383. The carb would be the cheapest, easy, and fastest way to a good running truck.
Looks to me your engine is set up more for a carb than FI.

i had a pretty bad ass 383 with a truck avenger and couldnt ever get it to run rite....so i ponied up for the newer holley projection....but i know nothing about tuning EFI via laptop so i couldnt ever get it to run right with that either....i ended up just putting a cummins in it :D....anyway if that is not an option for you id go with the option a couple posts up with the guy from 3rdgen.org.....or get the newer projection and find some one to tune it correctly....either way good luck lemme know how it goes...

thanks for the input guys. i really apreciate all the help i get here. im thinking i will probably end up throwing a carb on it and just drive it like that. at least for now. eventually it could end up with FI on it again. i will let you know how it goes
