Fuel Filter

You first need to tell us if it will be used for a carbed engine or FI (the filters are specific for FI).

I'd rather run a Racor setup.... best filter setups you can buy imo...

I have a carb setup Qjet on a 78 K5. The main line from the tank to the pump is 3/8. I would like to install a really nice fuel filter since this K5 has had problems in the past with dirty fuel. Looks like the one in the pic has ports for four lines. I only need two. Also the K5 has a return line to the tank but I don't think that needs to be filtered.

So just replace the in-carb filter.

I know many people don't like them, but it's a paper element filter that bypasses when it gets clogged up. No different than any other filter, just smaller and likely needs replaced more often if you've got a lot of junk in the fuel. Plus side, no more connections and it's free other than the filter replacements.

Even then, the stock "sock" in the fuel tank should keep large junk from getting to the carb. Unless your lines are rusty internally, in which case they should be replaced, as it sounds like you are doing anyways.

Keep in mind that a mechanical fuel pump should have the fuel filter mounted AFTER the pump.

good to know. Why is this?

Basically a mechanical pump is low pressure and is made to push fuel and placing a filter before the pump makes it work harder trying to suck through a filter.

Even an electric pump has the filter mounted after the pump for the same reason. The only difference is that an electric pump needs to be mounted as close to the fuel tank as possible and close to the lowest level of the tank as possible.

yes they are rusty. I just replaced one line. It is so much work. I'm not sure if I should replace the others. The line I replaced had a clog and had also rust thru. I think the clog was from dirt and grim getting into the line where it had rusted. I bent my own line. I'm thinking about checking for good vacum and calling it quits if it is ok. If I keep replacing the filter I hop I'm going to be ok.
