What should someone expect out of a 6.2? Thinking of buying one as a daily driver
 
2wd..... 4wd....?? my 2wd 87 burb with 31's on the rear and the tow package got a regular 23-24 on long highway trips at around 70mph. and a best ever of 27 to and from Chicago at mostly 60mph

Countered with my CUCV with 4.56's and 37's that gets about 13. So yeah, somewhere between those.:D
 
Yeah, 2WD do damn fine as long as they have the overdrive. 1/2 ton 4x4's do similar, again as long as they have the OD. 6.2 fuel consumption is awesome at an 1800 rpm cruise rpm. Every hundred extra rpm (at highway speed) drops about 1 mpg.

Worst combo is deep gears, heavy tires and no OD. My stock 1/2 ton with 3.42's and OD averages about 24 highway. My old Jimmy with 4.56's, no OD and 39.5" TSL's did about 16...which still ain't bad for what it was.

I agree with the comments about gearing (there seems to be a wide range of reports concerning 6.2 mileage).
My '83 K10 came with a 6.2 c-code, 700R4 (overdrive) tranny, and 3.08 gearing with 235/75R15 tires. According to my calculations, highway cruising is ~1400RPM@55MPH and ~1700RPM@65MPH. It's not great with a heavy trailer behind it, but for my style of driving, it's great. Over the last 15,000 miles, I've gotten used to 21-22 MPG at 65 MPH, 22-24 MPG at 55 MPH, and 18-20 in town (lightly loaded).

The mileage has improved since I replaced my c-code intake with a 6.5 intake. On the highway I have traded a noticeable amount of black soot for a noticeable amount of power (happy trade in my book). I don't yet have much data from after the swap, but my record mileage currently stands at 26.5MPG (highway). We'll see if that's repeatable or if it's just a fluke.

As for my other truck, Blue85 summed it up well:

1 tank of gas lasts me from November until April.

I suppose it's still 0MPG, but still very affordable.

I got 20-22 with my M1009 stock on the highway. I think I would have done much better with the manual trans.

Now I get around 16.5 with 4.88s, 33s, sm465 w/ ranger overdrive, and 5 inches of lift.
 
I've pretty much seen what others have here. My stock M1009 I drove for years gave me 22mpg highway with good fuel. Have no idea what my current resto will give me with the 700r. Once I get it registered and have driven it on a few longer drives I can comment.
 
My longest all highway trip I drove just under a thousand miles without stopping for fuel. Tank one had 1/8th left, tank two was just under a 1/4 when I filled up again. Took not quite 36 US gallons. 27 mpg...which is my all time best for that truck.
 
Dang, I did about the same run without stopping for fuel. Topped off in Phoenix, didn't stop for anything but food and restroom breaks till I got a bit E of Oklahoma City, just a bit over 1000 miles. But I've got a 60 gal tank (a bit over 50 usable), and my best mileage is just under 21 mpg in the crew cab. It's a chipped 6.6 instead of a 6.2, so not really relevant, just saw the numbers and had to post.
 
I bought my '90 K5 with 49k on the ticker back in 1994. 6.2 C-code, 700r4, 32" mud radials. I ran it very hard with most driving being in town or back roads so lots of stop and starts. Consistently got 18 MPG with that driving and got into the 20s on a couple of road trips driving well over the speed limit. Still remember getting a new '98 Tacoma 4-banger 5 speed and being disappointed it didn't get any better mileage...I was young and didn't know any better.
 
My daily driver m1009 gets about 18-19 with a 4" lift, stock gears, and 37" hummer radials. That's mostly highway driving.
 
Did you correct your speedo or account for the mileage difference in your calculation?

Yes I did. I calculated it every fill up for close to a year. Awhile ago, my fuel gauge stopped working correctly so I stopped calculating :doah:
 
And didn't weigh 3 tons...!...

Some posters on other sites claimed they put a 6.2 in a 80's Caprice and got 23 mpg...others wanted to put one in an older Nova or 78-87 Malibu and see if they could top 30 mpg...dont know if anyone did it though...

I have seen a 1964 Olds Dynamic 88 on Youtube someone stuffed one in--probably no better MPG than our square bodies though,those cars were heavy and not much better areodynamics..
