Emmettology 101
3/4 ton status
Ok, for people who don't know, I have an 82 GMC Jimmy(fullsize). I swapped
out the ol' 305 for a 1990 350 a couple weeks ago. Well at the time I did
not know that this 1990 350 did not have a provision for a mechanical fuel
pump and I had to use a mechanical unit. And I followed the instructions in
Hot Rod and drilled out my old style intake to work with the new style
heads.
So my friend had a cheap Masters pump, like the ones at Auto Zone that I
picked up for $15 buck brand new. I did not know much about elec. pumps so
I mounted it up on the frame rail beside the engine. Well, it ran good
around the parking lot, but when I took it out on the road it would bog/die.
It wasn't blowing any black smoke out the pipes so I figured it was starving
for fuel(as per what Summit Racing was saying) So I moved the pump to the
rear on the frame rail so it was close to the tank. Well After I did that,
no fuel at all. So I figured the pump may have been crap so I went out and
bought a Holley 7psi pump. I mounted it in about the same place as the
other, no fuel. So I followed the line and found a hole. I repaired the
line and got fuel again. So I start it up and take it down the road and
still get the bog/dying affect.
At this point I am pissed.
So, I go out and buy a new intake thinking the intake was leaking and I knew
I had a carb bolthole that was stripping. Get home, put the intake on. Get
the timing lined out and it fires up, I am happy. So I was trying to get
the timing right and I must have turn the dist. too far and it wouldn't run,
so I turn it back, still wont run. So I pull the fuel line off to see if I
am getting fuel, NO FUEL. AAAAHHH!!!!
So I go out and buy all new 3/8" fuel line and run it from the tank to the
carb and I replaced all the rubber in the line also. Ok, I unhook the line
and I get fuel now. So I am back to playing with timing and then I turn the
distributor a little too far again and it wont start, so I pull the full
line off and guess what, NO FUEL..
So as of now, I have all new:
carb - luckily under warranty at Auto Zone
Performer Intake
complete fuel line from tank to carb - 3/8's
new fuel pump
new filters
Anyone have any suggestions? My next step is dropping the tank and maybe
switching the sending unit or putting in the extra tank I have.
Thanks in advance,
Mike
