Notes:
i only need 4-5lbs. 6 lbs. max.
This is a 2WD longbed truck

1) Is there an electric fuel pump that pulls as well as it pushes or at least doesn't "mind" pulling, unlike most other electric pumps?

2) Are there low pressure belt-driven mechanical pumps available for small block chevy?
(4.3 blocks with fuel pump provisions are not easy to find.......)

3) How far is too far away when mounting an electric pump; i can get it about 30-32" inches away from the tank and below the level of the tank. Anything closer is difficult to the point that it may not be practical. i might be able to get at the fuel cluster thing but if not don't really want to take off the bed, make a door in the bed or drop the tank.

I have one like the round one shown below on my 6.2 diesel pickup--it is mounted on the crossmember that the cab supports bolt too, about 2 feet above the fuel tank...its been on it since 2003 with zero issues..it puts out 5-7 PSI and runs only until pressure builds, then it automatically tapers off and kicks in only when more fuel is needed..

I like the square "transformer" looking ones too,had several that worked fine..you can find them on E-bay for anywhere from 10 to 60 bucks depending on the style and pressure and GPM you need..
A 4.3 wont need that much GPM....images (22).jpg images (23).jpg

I don't think any electric pump can suck fuel from more than say,2-3 feet and expect to survive long..they push fuel better than drawing it from a distance...

You could use a in-tank GM pump too, with a regulator to reduce the pressure, but you say you want to avoid dropping the tank..

I don't think distance or push/pull will be an issue based on what you stated. If the pump is below the bottom of the tank, the pump will always have fuel, at least after the first time it primes, and you don't run it dry.

I've had an electric Bosch mounted on my frame rail for more than 6 years and almost 20000 miles. It's pulling fuel from about 36" away and it almost level with the bottom of the tank. No problems so far. Not sure of the pressure but my TBI only uses ~16psi of whatever it puts out.

I have the square Facet unit pictured on my K30. Mounted it on the frame, right under passenger foot area. Been there 20yrs and never a problem. Easily pulls the fuel (self priming) and pushes it to the carb. I have a clear fuel filter 2" inches before the pump, and another clear one before the carb. Great pump and quiet.

i don't know how 4WD's are, but it my case (2WD) the tank is on the driver's side and i can easily put the pump on the passenger side rail (where the two hardlines are joined by about 12" of rubber hose). But this is about 30-32" inches away. Is this the same layout with 4WD?
