I have a holley fuel pump for a BB chevy, I got it for free it has a spring that goes in between the acuator(this is the arm that the fuel pump pushrod pushes against, the black arm in the picture) and the housing, what is the spring for? The spring is broken but the acuator returns on its own, is it just to keep positive tension on the acuator when the motor is off, the acuator has about 1/4" or so of freeplay when it is in its resting position off the truck.

The spring is supposed to go where the red line is thanks guys

Maybe contact Holley and see if it is OK to run the pump without it? They might even be able to send a replacement.

Or why not just go to the hardware store and get the closest match you can? Are the retaining features broken?

It will return without it when your using your hand. Keep in mind that when your engine is turning 3-5000 rpm's it is not going to be able to return itself in time and could cause the push rod to get slack and slam into the arm as the arm is trying to return and BOOM, no more fuel pump. Call Holley, I'm sure they can either sell you a spring or give you the specs so you can go pick one up.

That spring is the return spring for the lever and DO NOT run the pump without it or you will damage the lobe on the cam and have to either swap cams or go to an electric pump.
