Fuel Pump ??

91 350 TBI
Went wheeling yesterday on my used 35"x14" X10 " rims , trimed to fit (some minor rub on front of the fenders still /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif , and no lift /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif)
Heard what I thought was a rock or something stuck in a drum (pulsing squeal that changed with speed)
When I stopped it was a solid high pitch whine comming from the rear of the truck. (over the rear diff.)
I am wondering if this is the fuel pump on it's way out (a little warning)
Has anyone else had this problem?
Or is there anything else I should know about the fuel pump ?

Haven't heard of this before but that would definetally be my guess. Is it still occuring? If it just keeps happening get ready for that pump to go. Did you run the truck out of fuel at some point? EFI fuel pumps often rely on fuel for lubrication and cooling, running them dry can do some irreperable damage.

It's never been run out of fuel since I've owned it (5 months)
It did start again yesterday but went away before I could get under to look around
No one I have talked to has seen this problem either /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Now we are worried about going off road and getting stranded in a bad place /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

If you are worried about it, replace it. A fuel pump is not that expensive, and not too hard to replace. It is alot better that being stuck in the woods with a dead fuel pump.

Actually, in his rig they are spendy. Mine will make a high pitched whine till it pressurizes. Does it go on for a long time? Only when your at an angle? How full was your tank when it did it? They are a PITA to replace and get everything right.

The tank was full , it was pulsing to the speed of the truck , when stopped it was a solid high pitch noise.
It seemed to make no difference with the angle of the truck (crawling down the back road)
The high pitch whine is very intermittent , seems to come and go at any time with no reason
I can go start it cold and it will start , or I can drive for a long time and it will just appear , then dissapear
So far it has not lasted more than aprox. 5 min.
I was told it may be a restriction in the fuel line i.e. filter
I think I will just keep driving it and see what happens in the next week or so
If anything comes of it I will post up the problem

sounds like it's time for a pressure gauge, and an amp meter , know what I mean,man?

Guage yes
Amp meter no ,what is there to using that for diagnosis ?
