My 94 Blazer has lost all power. The clowns at Pep Boys told me it was the intake manifold gasket determined by their Diagnostic test. I did all the work myself (they quoted me 900 bucks!!) I Changed the intake man. gaskets (I'm certain I did it right), new dist. cap, new rotor cap, new plugs/wires, new fuel filter, rebuilt TBI diaphragm, still no power. Even flushed the radiator for good measure. I made sure the dist. cap was repositioned correctly and all the plug wires are correct. The dist. shaft re-set off the mark a hair (I guess the tend to shift a bit) but I pulled and re-set the shaft over and over till it made its way all the way around again to the exact position. All the vacuum hoses are connected exacty right. The truck runs EXACTLY how it did before all the work. No better, and more importantly, No Worse. Pep Girls are no help since they didn't do the work, but I know they got it wrong. Someone on this forum mentioned the fuel pump might be bad but I can't find where it is. The engine idles fine but has no get-up-and-go, revs real high just to get moderate power, bogs bad on inclines and flutters the RPMs at 2800 trying to shift. Does this problem ring a bell with anyone? Peppy's just wants me to spend more money on another Diag. or more parts. Need Help!!

Good lordy,go find a real mechanic, last trip puke boys 20 years ago ended up with a front wheel falling off my van after they forgot to tighten the lugs. Frikin knucklehead INC.

I did a test on the EGR by sucking on the end of a vacuum hose attached and there seemed to be good pressure. Do you really have to drop the tank to get to the fuel pump?

I went through this with a Cadalaic a few months ago, TBI 350 just in a car. Guy told me it was running rough, would stall and hesitate. I told him I'd do the basics (fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap/rotor) but my gut told me it was the fuel pump. I replaced the basic stuff and it still ran the same. He took it to Sears and they told him it was the intake gasket. They (Sears) was 100% certain it was this and only this. I confirmed that it was bad with some carb cleaner...it was bad. I agreed to change it but told him it probably wasn't going to fix his problem. Changed it and it still ran the same, owner was starting to get a little mad at me (he didn't want to fork out the $$$ for the pump). About a week after I did the intake gaskets it died while he was driving it and wouldn't restart. He had it towed and had the shop install a new fuel pump. Car ran perfect after that. He didn't want to listen to me in the begining and it ended up costing him over $500 for the other shop to tow/change the pump. My point is....it's probably the fuel pump.

Do you really have to drop the tank to get to the fuel pump?

Yes. I'm not sure if the newer ones will have an access panel above them....but I'm guessing that it won't. You could cut the floor, but that's not a very good idea. It really isn't that hard to drop a gas tank. If you can do the intake gaskets, you can drop a tank.

Thanks a lot for all your help guys. That seems to be the common opinion that it's the fuel pump. I guess I could do it myself but Puke Boys need to answer for the time and money I've already put in the gaskets. >:( I guess my other question would be: if I need to change the filter does it have to go with the sending unit (I believe it has that setup)?

There should be a sock type filter on the sending unit. If you buy a new one (sending unit) it will come with it. The filter on the frame can be changed independtly of the sending unit.

yea, already changed the filter. Trucks almost out of gas anyway so I'll probably go ahead and do it.

Just buy a fuel pump and a new sock, you don't need a new sending unit. Try to get a genuine GM pump. I know, I bought a TRE performance pump and it took a crap in less than 8 months. If you can get a GM part number order one from gmpartsdirect.com it will be about half the dealer cost.
