fuel pump

Here is the story. Complete rebuild of a motor new fuel lines new fuel tank. Carb. rebuilt . It ran for a about 40 miles then died. Traced the problem to the new fuel pump. It wasnt sucking. Bought a new fuel pump same problem. It takes 2 bolts to mount the fuel pump one on each side of pump. When i put the fuel pump in its place and put one bolt in. I can rock in back and forth and it pumps and sucks. I put other bolt in and tighten everything up I got nothing. Oil is clear. It cranks over great. thanks clark


P.S. My daily driver is a beatiful 1989 silverado sub. The thing Im working on is my Daughters 1966 mustang. 200c.i.d. motor
 
Are you sure its located on the push rod inside correctly?...--edit--I'm not familiar with a Ford 200 six,it might not even have a push rod?..

If it does,it can be a pain the get the pump's rocker arm under it correctly ,and not have the rod slide down past it,before you get it in there right....some sticky grease on the engine side of the push rod can help hold it in place..

It would be highly unlikely for 2 pumps to "fail" the same way...maybe try squirting a bit of motor oil in the fuel inlet on the pump,that will help the little check valves to make a good seal--they might have got stuck from sitting in the box on the shelf a long time or something..most of the old mechanics filled the rocker arm cavity with wheel bearing grease too,I dont know if that helped the pump or not--cant hurt it any...

Once the pump is bolted on,you can crank the engine with the fuel lines not connected to it,to feel if it has suction and pressure at the inlet and outlet fittings..

Another possibility,though uncommon,is either the lobe on the cam that operates the push rod or the rod itself is worn down enough not to make a long enough stroke...in that case,an electric fuel pump mounted near the tank would be the only solution,other than tearing the engine out and apart..
 
It runs on a lob on the cam and is apparently sliding off of it or the new cam wasnt built to the correct specs. Going to shove my head down by the block and take a look in the fuel pump hole it see whats going on. If I dont respond it means im stuck between the block and fender well. thanks
