The fuel gauge on my 1986 M1008 pickup reads very radically. I want to replace it but I don't know, Is there a difference between a sending unit for diesel and gasoline?

Have you verified it is actually the sender, and not the gauge or associated wiring?

If you have not done so already, search for threads regarding fuel gauges and repair/testing.

A sender is a sender... Short the sender out, it should peg full. If it does, good sender. Then the search is on for a faulty connection or a bad wire.
