OK guys, looks like I'm going to change out my drivers side fuel tank on my 84 K2500. Can I use one from a 87 (with baffles for TBI) with my 84 sender?

Thanks!

I looked up the tanks on LMC and checked the depth of the tank. I bought them from elsewhere, but the specs were nice.
FWIW, I used an 87 sender in a 77 tank

I just want the baffles to make the fuel gauge stop waving at me.

Just keep the tank full
:haha:

Just find a baffled tank with the same measurements as yours. Should be ok

Well yeah.... the 87 TBI tank is dimensionally the same... as long as the 84 sender fits. (Reason 4 this thread)

The baffles are not what do that. The float doesn't reside inside the baffle even on the TBI tanks.

The "damping" of the sending unit reading is done through the gauge. If it bounces around with fuel slosh, the gauge is the problem. That is why when testing the gauges the manual says to give it time to respond to changes in resistance.

Thanks for the education! You probably saved me some coin, and that's a good thing.

My gauge used to flop around pretty good, then one day it decided it liked 1/4 tank and it stuck there.
My sender is grounded. When I disconnect the sender it goes beyond full. I have contunity from the press on sender wire connector down the harness.
Sometimes if I press down real hard on the sender connector it reads for a little while. So I also wondering if anyone repops the sender connector?

I'm not sure they repop that connector. This is that single wire rubber one, right?

FWIW I hate those. If it were mine, and I was having problems with that style connector, I'd cut both ends off and I'd use a single wire weatherpack to replace it, which is exactly what GM did for the TBI stuff, except two wire since they added the fuel pump power.

If the gauge is problematic, but the wiring is good, you should be able to ground then open the sender wire connection, and it should pretty much read instantaneously from beyond full to below empty, and vice versa. It *should* take a few seconds for the gauge to make that full sweep.

Yep, single round press on connector. With no threads on the sender I don't see how I can mod it.

Oh...you meant the tank end. I assumed the one further up the line. You might be able to pop the connector off and scuff up the post it sits on if it's corroded? Don't think I've ever dealt with that type connector at the tank.

Yes @ the tank. Cleaned the @$!@% out of both ends.

Have you tried running a jumper wire from that terminal to the connector further up, to figure out if it's the tank end or connector that is bad?

New sender isn't ridiculous to pay for anymore, but dealing with the top of the tank is a pain for sure!

last new spectra premium units I got for my self and a friend I found the best price shipped on ebay . I just got 2 tbi baffle long bed 20 gal tanks for under 90 each shipped a month or so ago .

I have not. I only folower the connector over the tank, through the frame rail. From there it appeared to splice into a body harness (tape). I did not follow it further forward.
I have soldered jumpers a while back on my instrument board to get high beam and turn signal indicators to work. However considering the gauge reads way past full when disconnected I didn't think the gauge would be the problem.

Good info, how was the quality?
