fuel tank safety

The pickups listed in the article have one or two "saddle" tanks mounted on the sides of the bed, outside of the frame railes. The K5s have one tank mounted in the rear, between the frame rails. BIG difference.

I also remember reading that the whole issue was blown out of proportion. This article even mentions "hundreds" of burn incidents. Compare that to the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of this style pickup sold during the 15 years from 1973 to 1987.

It was blown out of proportion, one of the big TV networks was sued because they set one up to explode on impact and filmed it for a big article on how they explode on impact.

Remember they rigged it because they could not get it to explode without rigging it

I realize the tank inside the frame rails is way safer, but now everything is plastic tanks. Albeit thick plastic, cruising the wrecking yards I have seen quite a few plastic tanks broken or ripped

There really is no super safe way to carry an explosive fuel such as gasoline in a car
