anybody thought bout it or attempted it? you would use the same parts for as u would for a k5, but cut the top and shorten it and somehow bolt it to the cab. just had a mental picture of it. anybody try it?

That would be kinda cool, if it was done right. I would imagine you would just lop off the roof above the windshield and below the back window and weatherstrip the all cut edges. Maybe I'll Photochop something if I get some free time...

Thought of the same a few days ago.. only...

Crew cab 8 foot bed... Chop the top and the back down to the floor..chop out the front side of the bed....install rubber matting or something over the crack, weld in 2 sets of bench seats into the bed... boom...instant convertable 1 ton supersize suburban. 12 passenger capacity.. Maybe even fit a 5th bench seat? 15 passenger... GO DUALLY!

This was a moderately popular mod on the truck show circuit in the early 90's. Once upon a time there was a company that offered a kit with gaskets and latches to use the original (now cut off) top.

Didn't Dodge make a convertible Dakota back in '88 or '89 from the factory? I remember them being described as "ludicrously short on legroom". Guess they had to make room behind the seat for the top when it was down...

One of my neighbors still drives one of those things. Top looks pretty sad by now though.

There was a one of those in...I'm thinking Four Wheeler a few years ago. If it wasn't them it was 4W&OR. A guy in New Jersey with a decent sized lift and it had the fully removable top made out of the original hard top. Remember thinking it was odd if a bit impractical for me.

If you have access to stacks of those magazines you might thumb through some.

US Body Source, the fiberglass guys, have such a top ... which might, I would add, work very well for 73-75 Blazers as a half-cab.

Anyway...

I can't get their friggin web page to link inside frames, so just go to 73-87 Chebbies and scroll down.

hm?

Why lob off the top behind the windshield? Why not cut the windshielf frame and weld in the windshield frame from a junked blazer with a fully removable top? Seems that would be much cleaner.

If I had a 67-72 2wd or any 2wd shortbox id prolly do it in conjuction with making it a Rat Rod.

Somehow this doesnt' sound easier than just chopping the top off a burb....

No but it makes me think of buying a school bus and making it a convertable for my 5th year highschool reunion.
