I'm looking to build-down and switch to a full convertible since I rarely wheel and the Buzzard is so bad off body wise. I've found a few First Gen projects for around $3k that need floor boards and don't run. One is a factory CST A/C, cruise, power brake truck. Am I crazy to let it go because it needs rockers and a tailgate? I've not seen it in person so I can't say how bad anything really is.

I'm just wondering how much is too much when they are as hard to find as they seem to be.

An "inexpensive" 1st Gen is one of the most expensive trucks you will ever buy.....

Rust repair will eat you alive financially.... IMHO, there is no such thing as a "good" $3000 1st Gen.

I bought mine for 2300 with quite bit of problems I wish I would have held out for one with a better body. If you can do the work yourself and want to tackle the puzzle that is rockers and torsion boxes then get it. Usually when the rocker is gone so is everything behind it. I did my own rockers and just used sheetmetal on the inner panels since no one is going to see them anyway. It all depends on how involved you want to get in the restoration. Or just making it a good driver. The window frame and cowl area are more in portent than the rockers to Me since they aren't made reproduction. Even rotted first gens are going for decent money these days.

i picked up my first gen for $1200, didnt run, has some rust. didnt take much to get it running and ive been driving it for about 3 weeks now daily, they are out there, just have to look.

the worst rust is behind the door on this side (it looks like the rocker is rusted out but its just surface)

You scored a decent one for a great price,I like it!

Well, I'm gonna keep searching. Any full convertible would do, I'd almost get a half cab and find a full convertible to do a conversion, but would prefer to do the last amount of body work I can get by with.
