Is this a pretty common setup for mounting a valve on a C channel frame?

If so, there must be very little force on the valve.

That is common. There is no force on the valve, well only what you can apply to it through the steering wheel. Hydraulics do all the work at the ram, there is no mechanical linkage between the box & axle.

If you can do not weld the bracket to the frame.
Drill and bolt is the way.

Thats about where I put my valve on the frame. It's been there for 3 years with no problems
