I'm having a dilemna of sorts and I can't ask the Mrs. because she just rolls her eyes so y'all can be the voices of reason for me.

I have a 1972 Pontiac Ventura II with 68,000+ original miles on her that my G-pa gave me. He bought the car a few years before he passed away and he never really liked it so it became mine. In the years since, I've replaced all of the suspension and tie rods, ball joints, idler arm, etc. and I added an Edelbrock intake and 1406 carb and a Mallory Unilite distributor. She runs like a raped ape, but she looks rough. Both quarters are starting to rust out, the interior is shot and the paint shines like cement. IMO, it's the ultimate sleeper because so many people thinks it's a POS until they go up against it and get whooped.

Anyway, I've been looking at her over the winter realizing how much it will take to get her looking like she did in her prime and I'm not sure I want to do the work. It's kind of a hassle to get in and out of, it's not terribly comfortable and I have so much planned for my Suburban that I don't know when I'd find time for it in the near future. I talked to a friend of mine and told him I might sell it and he asked me "how much?". When I told him $2500 he told me he'd buy it.

I thought about selling it and using the $$ to fund the Suburban project with a 4" lift, 35's and all of the extra's like frame brace, new tie rods, etc. My wife tells me I might regret it later, but I'm not so sure anymore since our Suburban is the subject of my obsession. It's comfortable, gets better mileage than the Pontiac and can go places the car can't and Debb and I can take Katy and the dog with us somewhere and have a lot more fun as a family.

So what say you? Keep the fast as hell muscle car that needs work, or sell it to build up a nice Suburban into a nicer, more offroad capable rig that can haul my family to some fun adventures?

P.S.
I'll get pics of the car in the AM and post 'em up here.

If it is really that fast of a sleeper. Line up the $100 runs. Then you get to keep the car and build the burb.:woot:

It's not that fast and besides, I've been told I need to grow up a little bit.

Ok, a lot, but that's only when Debb is sitting next to me and I stomp on the gas and scare the living shat out of her.

could be worse... guy i worked with did that to his wife while riding his busa.... over the crest of a bridge... 200 ft up. she pee'd all over him, never asked to go for a ride on the busa again either.

:)

to answer the question. if the truck is your obsession, sell the muscle car. I got the camaro in high school, loved goin 120 with my hair on fire down the interstate. got the jetta, learned to enjoy the mileage challenge getting 60+mpg on the highway. and now im in love with the truck, in all its rusty, banged up glory.

thing is, a fast car... is just a fast car. you cant do anything else with it. the truck, is just as much fun at 6mph off road, buti can use it to haul things, tailgate at concerts, drive in bad weather. etc. etc. which is why i havent always been a truck guy, but since buying the big griz, i have rapidly become one.

I tend to agree with the selling of the car but you really have to ask yourself if you want to. I put some of my junk up for sale a while back and after about 3 days decided it was a no go.

I don't like early 70s cars for the most part and like you said its not a Nova so several years from now if you want one again well go to AZ and buy one.

I would sell it though. 4x4s are my current obsession.

This may shape up to be a bad year for gas, if so you may have a harder time selling it. Take the cash and run.

Sell it.

I sold Big Ugly this summer. It was hard. I loved it's loud-1 ton-CUCV-38's-camo paint-scared luxury cars self so much. But it really wasn't practical for me to keep it, I couldn't fix/modify it and The Blazer any time soon, and I definitely wasn't getting rid of The Blazer (far more useful in my life right now). Meanwhile I needed a more reliable DD. I sold Big Ugly and bought The Tracker and don't regret it. I miss Big Ugly but it's just not something I could justify having anymore. One more expense that I couldn't afford and really didn't have any use or place for.

i agree with the "wanna-be Nova" thinking... not bad that it's a 72 tho... decent looking body, but i'd sell it without regret... if you can get decent coin for it.. 70 Nova, 71 Cuda, , etc? no way...

it's like when i was younger and guys would be hotrodding out some 78, 79 something or other, or 4 drs, and the first thought would be "why bother? it's fugly"... thats why it was so nice when the 80's Monte's and GN's came out, it was like, "finally after 10, 12 yrs, a decent looking hotrod body again!"
