From my friends CAT C-15 Engine front timing gear set 1 of the bearings . Looks like a mini lightning bolt pattern .

Manufacturing defect. Seen it before.
It looks like pitting.
Could be manufacturing defect or Could be long intervals between oil changes creating acid environment that eats metal.

If it was lack of maintenance, they should all be showing some of that or some blue-ing.
that's from the dremel tool. Duh.
If you look closely at the photo there is little bits missing from the bearing at the parting line. im guessing the direction of rotation was how the red arrow shows??
a little piece of material came off and ground/galled/rolled/milled its way along?? Thus why the Dremel tool effect???

any damage in this area, between the oil supply and the parting line on the bearing?
Only damage you see in pics on just that half only .
yup, then i stick to my story! material from the bearing seperation was being carried into the bearing. the oil flow/pressure kept it from coming full circle, and any material that was not imbedded escaped out the sides of the bearing.
