funny glow plug controller

ok, so my controller makes this wierd grinding noise when it's on. it doesn't just click on and click off. today my glow plug controller would only glow for about 4-6 seconds. which was enough, but i'd like to glow closer to 10 seconds, and when i released the button and then pressed it again it wouldn't work. any thoughts?

how much do those go for?

also, if it goes out on me, is there a way to manually cycle the glow plugs - like touch a certain couple of wires to the battery? seems like i could possibly touch the peg on the controller which points toward the engine to teh positive terminal and that should do the trick.

Grounding the light blue wire will force the GP's on, bypassing the controller completely. If the relay is done you're SOL though. At least they're pretty cheap, usually under $20.

not really..

I've jumped glow plug relays with a pair of pliers..just bridge the two big red wires together with them ,or a peice of heavy wire..or jumper cables..ten seconds later,start it up,and remove the jumpers..--who needs a working relay??..

Had to do that to my winch a few times too,when one of the solenoids rusted up ,and refused to engauge..

If it's over 80 degrees shouldn't need the GPs at all.
