I didnt take any pics and as far as pointers, have small hands and extreme patience. lol.
Here is what I did;
1) First and foremost, make up the jumper to bypass the rear safety switch, you need this to get the tailgate down and the window 1/2 way rolled out.
2) so, first thing is to remove the panel on tailgate and put in bypass, this can be done with the glass down and tailgate down, takes 2 minutes to do this.
3) Next I used some orange rubber work cones from my work van to support the window when putting out (Up) in the horizontal position. I highly recommending supporting the window. With the tailgate down, move the window OUT (UP) about 1/2 way, enough to get access to the 2 nuts that hold everything in place.
4) With the window in position and supported DISCONNECT THE BATTERY!!! If you dont, there is a 99.99999% chance youll touch the connections on the back of the switch, BTDT luckily didnt fry anything
5) The window motor is in the way on the drivers side, so both nuts 7/16th need to be taken off from passenger side. You basically just slide your hand inside and start taking the nuts off 1/8th a turn at a time, lol. I would recommend some penetrating lube prior but keep it out of the electronics. You do have access to 2/3s of the nut to get a wrench on and get a some turns on it, just takes time.
You will have to pry the switch and stuff off the body of the truck from underneith, this will allow you to get the nut off easier as you unscrew it. Otherwise the nut wont clear the top of the stud. understand where im coming from?
Anyways, once the nuts are off, you just pull the keyswitch and everything out and unplug the connections. I recommend not trying to get the back of the switch off (the electrical connections for switch) while its in the truck, just wait to you get the nuts off, itll be 10000% easier this way. The connections on the back of the switch arent in the way of you removing the nuts anyways.
While this may be a tedious approach, I felt that removing the regulator wasnt necessary and really wouldnt have gained me much more room. I started to take the regulator out, you have to move the window up / down to move the arms so you can get access to all the bolts that hold it on. When I did this, stuff started shifting, meaning the 2 bolts I took out didnt suppor the regulator any more, so when I moved the window to get access to the other bolts, the whole thing moved on me. I can just see me trying to get everything lined up when trying to put the bolts back< IMO that was just asking for more headaches. So, I was able to get the switch out by merely removing the back panel, putting in a bypass and putting window up 1/2 way in the horizontal position.
It cost about 120bux shipped.
Im sure I could have it rekeyed but probably just live with having 3 keys to my truck, I dont want to risk tearing this apart just to have a matching key. Not worth the risk IMO. I dont drive this truck that much and dont use the rear window key that much either. But I did want it to work properly. I have to remind myself this is a 27 year old truck , stuff wears out. lol.
I guess technically this could be done with the tailgate in the up position and the window 1/2way down/up, but the the angle you have to bend your body to get your arm in there was just crazy, that is when I figured out the tailgate needs to be down, this really made a different, also be carefully not to lean on the glass when its 1/2 out and in the horizontal position, I had to keep reminding myself to get off the glass, even though it was kinds supported. I would say some properly adjusted sawhorses and a blanket under the glass would be good.
