let's say you found a cheap short bus and decided to convert it to 4x4. Would it be similar to a c30 to k30 or is there a bunch of fab required?

Mine 30 years ago.
It was simple fabrication.
I made my own spring mounts and my tcase crossmember.
It depends on your year some years have one side of the front frame horn angling out that makes it harder to make the front spring mount.
Mine was like that so it was more of a challenge.
Also the mounts will be a little taller so they need to be braced. That's because the frame and running gear is setup different from a truck.
Mine were about 8" tall with 2" springs.
And because of how the running gear is setup, the tcase will hang below the frame by quite a bit.
I am working on an express conversion and contemplating an ifs system
