ya ya ya before you guys start shittin on the 80 let me just make it clear.. I am contemplating tearing out the locking mechanisms and convert it to open. Which is one of my questions has anyone ever done an open conversion or seen it?

Second question.. I used to hear some noises when I'd tweak the k5 but lately I been hearing a popping noise every now an then. After hitting a little mud but it's not bad just noticeable.. this normal for g80 lockers?

I don't recall hearing any noises. Might get a thunk when it locks, but can't think of hearing anything otherwise. Not sure if it's been replaced, but my truck has 200k on a 14sf grenade lock, and it still works!!!

The only noise I've ever heard from a G80 was when parts of it went through the cover. Shit is made of glass, at least in the 6 lug diff's.

Assuming this is a ten-bolt G80... Removing the mechanism will lower the stress level, but it will not make the fragile carrier any less fragile. Find an open carrier. I have one posted in the classifieds depending on your spline count.

I agree with tRusty, if you can hear it something is broken. I had a g80 in a 12 bolt many moons ago, it worked well and was quiet until the day it made a "bang" noise and pushed bits thru the cover.

I totally agree that when a gov bomb ticks, shortly after explodes.

Mine went away a couple of months ago. Parked it. Was going down the road and turned left. The Blazer pushed into the turn. Thought the power steering died, until BOOM. Then it turned. Did that until I pulled it into the garage where it sits. Nothing through the cover though.

This is the bLazer, right, and not the Jimmy?

Because for some reason, the axles locked together like a spool. It was all I could do to get it to turn and not hit the light pole. Then BAM, it released.
