Gantry crane build. (10' w X 10.5' h)

Ah. Lol. Oh well. I've been itching to fab something for a long time anyway. So this will scratch that itch for now :grind::hack::weld:

But the funny coincidence in there is that I'm using the money from selling the BEE body to pay off what I charged to build this lol:rolleyes:
That was partly my point. We could have worked a trade. Which I guess we still are, just some greenbacks for the placeholder instead.

I thought you knew, lol. I thought I mentioned having to build it or pic one up before I could yank the bee apart.... Oh well lol. This one will fit my shop correctly for sure, and be a conversation piece during BS/drinking sessions at the shop bar :waytogo:

Same outcome in the end I guess

I got a couple hrs of shop time in last night. Moved a bunch of crap, got the cordoba out, assembled the new saw, and drug out the square tube.

Thursday is my next day off and I already told the wife I'm putting in 8-10 hrs at the shop that day.

So I should at least get the saw set up, trued, and leveled. Then get all my pieces cut hopefully. If all is going well I'll stay longer if needed and get some stuff tacked together too.

the WEN bandsaw looks identical (besides the paint) to my HF unit. The base is a POS so I made a frame out of angle and put casters on it. Get a good blade for it and let it do work :waytogo:

I looked at the HF one, the WEN, some other brand I can't remember, AND a Grizzly..... All Identical except for color lol.

I have to borrow the mag drill/slugger from work tonight. Then tomorrow I'll drill all the holes in the plates and beam.
After that I can weld the uprights and angle braces to the plates.

Once that's completed it's just marking and drilling the pin holes in the uprights to make it fully usable.

Sometimes the right tool for the job, is the ONLY tool for the job lol.

16 holes, 9/16", 7/8" thick material. 1 hr to lay it all out, drill, and clean up.

I want one now. Lol

Got a little farther on this. It's next to usable really.
It just needs a few holes drilled for the pins and then to finish a couple welds after that's done.

only thing i would do if mine is get some big thick beefy washers like u-bolt washers and weld them in line for the pins you put in . help support the load and keep it from mashing the metal up as fast as no washer .

not to say your g-c is going to crash and burn tho the way its built . @shady

I was thinking of that washer thing. I drilled the holes at 11/16 so I want to see if I can get washers with the same size hole.

But one thing I can't do is add washers for that to the slider holes.

It'll probably be fine for the limited amount of use it'll get probably get.
It's one of those tools that I'll almost never use, but will be amazing when I need do need it.

make washers with the mag drill you got now to make them the same size . use some scraps and whip some up real quick .

I still have more holes to drill, paint, better lifting mechanism, round the edges, cap the tubes, etc... to do. But it's usable for my current needs. So I'll do all of that later.

Normally I would do it now. But I need it to pull my Rumble bee truck apart, and get it's remains loaded on a trailer.
Then it'll get used to put it's replacement together quick.

Then, sometime this spring, I'll be able to finish this up when I have more time. Plus I want it to surface rust a bit before paint because it removes the manufacturing oil pretty well.

highway / d.o.t in my state now dont even paint the bridge beams anymore when new install . they let them rust slow in the open air .

they have found the level of rust is much less than if the beam was painted . the main hw threw town is prob 15 years old now on the beams un painted from new and look great and no scale rust just surface rust .

now other beams on bridges that get blasted / painted every 4-5 years look like pot mark zit faced beams and you can see this even after a fresh paint job .

thats whay i say no paint for me these days on a lot of stuff .

but its yours do as you wish . looks great and i wana build one even tho i dont use one hardly at all .

It's called weathering steel. A588. It's designed that way. Rick bought standard A992 steel. It should be painted.

My main reason for painting is to prevent rust hands when moving it around.
That, and to keep it sliding well for height adjustments.
