Any good gas can mounting ideas out there? I have stock bumpers on my K5 and wanted to mount 1-2 gas cans somehow.
Something like these:

The only idea i could come up with was putting on of these on and ratchet strapping them on or something similar.

As they're bulky and heavy (what, 45# or so full?), they're often the cause for aftermarket bumpers :D

There used to be the swing-away spare tire carriers which were set up for the old Blitz-style cans, see upper right corner of

for instance.

Having run one of those, and given the difficulty of finding them any more, I think your idea of the the hitch-mounted rack is the best idea. I would not wanna hork those things to and from a roof rack.

Note that those racks wiggle as most receivers are kinda loose. You should load the gas cans in the center and lighter stuff towards the outer edges. Alternately, you can ratchet strap the ends of the carrier to the tailgate or something to stabilize the load.

can you weld? the only problem with mounting them to the receiver that I could see is that in order to open the tailgate they would have to come off.
A hitch mounted swing away wouldn't be to terribly hard to make and would keep your tailgate from being blocked.

kind of like a mix of these two.

I think the hitch mount is best. Agree it will likely wiggle some. Could be a dragging issue obviously depending on what you were climbing. Good thing is it would be easy to remove. Other good thing is I think you can get them from Harbor Freight for $50 or less, if you can justify buying from them. :(

Swing away would be pretty cool, especially to get a spare tire mount that doesn't take up interior space, but that is a significant amount of work.

Those gas cans are essentially "illegal" in the US FWIW. Stupid EPA new-anti-spill-cans-cause-more-spills-than-they-prevent are the only things allowed to be sold, the Scepter (military) cans aren't legal to sell anymore. I really like them, when you can find them being resold they are $50 at best, unless you get very lucky and find someone that doesn't know what they are and what they go for.

Yeah I think the best option will be a hitch/basket setup. This won't be every day or anything. I just used that can as an example.

Slight hijack: They can be had new, actually, from http://jagmte.com/ as long as you tick a box that says you're going to export them and never use them domestically :haha: Not cheap, but IMO the Scepter style are infinitely better than the stupid Blitz ones. I haven't use the NATO metal ones to have experience with those.
