What are guys using these days for gas cans? I mean for spare fuel on the trail? I have a bunch of the old 5 gallon metal jerry cans with the metal spout and I'm trying to decide if I should stick with those or if there are better options now. They always leaked like crazy on me.

I surfed around a little and it looks like the kind I have are no longer available, having been replaced by those enviro-crap plastic nozzle things. I see they had some sort of "spill proof" thing maybe in between the metal ones and the enviro ones? Maybe I should keep the cans and get new caps and a nozzle if I can find the pre-enviro ones?

plastic leak on me. best I've heard to use are the europe/nato style cans. never tried them but they say the dpnt leak

I was just reading up it sounds like the new military plastic (MPC USGI) cans are the hot ticket, but I can't see where to get them with the good cap and nozzle. They are made by Scepter and they only show the crappy CARB spouts too. Do the environmentalists have to ruin everything?

Im using german Nato cans. IF you get the right kind of funnel, you dont need the nozzle. Ill take a pic tomorrow of my setup. I can empty a 5 gal can in a minute or two and not drip a drop. Ive always modified my nozzles that I got from another company. Those flex cheap metal ones always have issues. Also with the metal cheap ones, there are two small bars that you can bend to get you a better seal. they are only tack welded in place and will eventually bend back.

PICTURE TIME!!! lol

I bought a Nato style can (wedco) before Federal law said they can no longer be made or sold. The spout is a solid spout with a plastic tip and they DO NOT LEAK. You can no longer get those cans for fuel but you can still buy them for potable water. I've thought about buying the blue one (for potable water) and painting it red and using it for fuel instead but i'm sure the lining that is used inside is not compatable with fuel.

While I have never needed more than 31 gallons of fuel without passing a gas station, I have been considering Kolpin containers http://www.kolpinpowersports.com/products/water-and-fuel-packs-2.html to carry water. Rotopax http://www.rotopax.com/home.php sells a similar product but they are a bit more expensive. Either company offers a very simple and effective mount. FYI you can use the "self venting" spout on their fuel cans and it passes straight through unlike the "CARB" spout that is included with fuel containers.

These are interesting. I wonder how they get away with selling the non-CARB spouts.

The non carb spouts are for "water and non flammable liquids" for legal purposes but they are just as resistant to fuel as the carb spouts, and they thread onto the container just the same.
