You could have saved yourself some typing because you only mentioned pot 2 more times . . . not that any body is counting.

But I know what you mean, I hate spelling it out fully myself.
I noticed that.
But, believe it or not, I left out a bunch of stuff I intended to write.........
I find I have to spell it out at least once unless I am typing to some electronics techs.
Otherwise if I mention pot purchases.......
I did leave off two other things.
I have seen some sending units that had a float that went straight up and down on rails with a spiral bar in the center.
As it moves up and down, the bar twists adjusting the pot.
This eliminates the moment arm problem where the angle of the arm affects the movement of the pot.
Plus, on modern cars, they should be more accurate. If you have a computer in the system, its very easy to compensate for different tanks and depths.
You simply start out with an empty tank, tell the computer its empty. It remembers that reading,
Then, every couple of gallons or so, you tell the computer to remember that setting.
When the tank is full, the computer has built up a compensation table that adjusts for all the varibles.
Then you just feed that information into the computers in all the vehicles with that same setup.
That is probably how the digital readouts in most cars work. But, I have seen some cars that the readout of gallons left or miles to empty do not agree with the gauge.
It seems that the gauge is not in the loop so to speak.
Of course, I once hauled some gas to a friend who was sitting on the side of the road with an empty tank and a message center that told him quite cheerfully that he had 150 miles to empty........
Oh, and: pot pot pot pot pot, pot, pot.......
Now I feel better.
