Here we go

I gassed the K5 (auto trans) up in the driveway a few days ago with foot on the brake and trans in Neutral, engine was already warm from driving around town...

I really gassed 'er up (pedal to the floor) a few times in fast/very short (2 second) bursts, I took my foot off the gas and waited a second or two (no tac meter and windows up/AC going...) and couldn't tell if the engine was spooled down fully or not. anyway I tried to put it in Park and after passing R (reverse) the stick felt stiff and dropped itself into Park right before the needle was on "P"...The linkage was checked before and is OK so that freaked me a little...

I had to quickly try and put it in park and shut down since the neighbors didn't exactly like the noise of the dual exhaust

Anyway I went back to Neutral and shut the engine down and put it back in park.

Could this have hurt the trans at all if I wasn't fully spooled down and tried to put it in Park? I've been told it would cause damage since I dropped it in "R" while moving the needle to "P".

Had my left foot on the brake the entire time and didn't hear the tires chirp or any grinding noises, etc. that I can remember and if anything a very slight "tug" feeling.

Is this a bad habit and could I have damaged the trans? The way it was explained to me...I basically did the equivalent of putting a moving car in reverse without stopping???

I wouldn't make a habit of it. I've had this happen with cars before and sometimes you'll hear some complaining from the parking pawl inside the transmission, but unless you're doing this on a regular basis it probably didn't hurt anything.

Thanks! :D

I had felt a little "thud" when I stopped on "R" (reverse) and no grinding when in Park. Also, I noticed that if your foot isn't all the way down hard enough on the brake you cannot put the AT into Park so that's probably why the stick felt stiff between reverse and park?

So if wasn't the same as putting a moving car in reverse, right? Never tried it and never will since I've heard of AT's dropping (literally) off older vehicles going down the road while doing that :eek1:

No, not that bad, lol. I had that happen once when I was a teenager and manually shifting an 89 Toyota Cressida and there was no trans interlock. Trans was fine, but those wheels locked up and scared the crap out of me!
