Has anyone had gas gage issues when the tank gets down past a half? I have two suburbans ( an 85 and an 90 ) that both have the same problem with the needle showing different levels that flucuate between 1/8 and 3/4 every time the tank gets below half full. Is this a common problem or just a coincidence?

common from every one I've ever had. Typically it stays full until half tank then drops like a rock (or close to)

No reason they shouldn't be consistent, none of the tanks are shaped funny (full is roughly the same surface area as empty) and all GM senders the same vintage (car, truck whatever) operate the same way.

There is no question that there could be common problems though. '85 is an unbaffled tank, so I'd be expecting either the float mechanism, wiring (ground or sender wires) or the gauge itself. The baffle breaking, which is fairly common on the TBI K5's, is ruled out in this case.

I have this same problem in my 78. I pulled the sender and it has consitent ohms accross the range. I think it has to do with the boyency of the foam piece.

Could be your gauge. There is a thread with troubleshooting info, I'll try to find it for ya.

Here you go. Read post 94 and click the link. Mine ended up being a couple bad gauges. Click
