Gas Gauge Fluttering?

Hey

yes i know a mechanical fuel gauge WILL float. but mine when i accelerate hard or soft drops and when i turn on my headlights it drops a 1/4 of a tank Could my fuel sending unit be bad? if so do you guys know where you can buy/find one. BTW i have an 84.

Also how do i find out what size tank i have? i thought i had a 33gal but when i filled it last(gauge read "E") i could only put about 20 gals in it?

sounds like you need to check your grounds first

oh and they didn't have 33gal tanks 31gal is the big one

what do you mean by "check my grounds"? do you mean to follow the wires and check for crossed ones or frayed ones?

there was a time when i turned on my headlights and my gas guage would instantly drop. and after some searching i found that the ground wire from the insturment cluster was not fully connected. After re grounding it. i have never had a problem.

so thats a place to start..
