Gas Gauge question

I swapped a new used fuel level gauge into my cluster today. When I removed it from the donor cluster, it was at 1/2 tank. So I didn't touch it. What should the fuel gauge read when the key is off? Tank level? Empty? Half?

On Chevys and newer Fords, it should read what it was reading when you turned it off. It will move to the correct place according to what is in the tank when you put power to it.

damn, so it has more fuel than i thought... thanks fellas!

well, maybe some of that fuel is water from the submarining i did?
