Just got K5 and the gas gauge is stuck pass full . Where should I start looking for my problems ? Going to check fuse .1st . All my gauges work on a 1974 k5 so I want to get it working .

Not a fuse. Something on the sending unit wire, or ground for gauge/tank.

Have you tried searching here for similar problems? All the fuel gauges are wired the same, only variation is really the dual tank setups because of the switch. Overfull means either the sending unit wire is shorted to ground or the opposite, there is a break in that wire, I can never remember which.

Can disconnect sending unit plug near tank, and ground that wire. If gauge goes opposite direction, issue is at the tank...ground wire, etc.

My post was pretty brief, but I was in a hurry. If you require more detailed advice, please post up more. The gauges can be pretty frustrating, but they are all only 3 wires, power, ground, and signal. If they move, typically the power/ground to the gauge is ok, and it's a problem elsewhere.

Known common problem spots (I think) in order of precedence are the ground wire from sending unit to frame, gauge cluster connector, sending unit, and clips that make contact on back of gauge to printed circuit "board".

Well I just got it . It's on trailer now coming home with it .
But as I was checking it over with flashlight on trailer . I found a wire broken loose at top of gas tank ? Not sure where it goes , but that's a good start !!!
Looks like I might have to drop tank to get to it

Black wire is the ground, the sending unit wire varied in color (mine is pink), but since the sending unit wire runs all the way up the truck, should be pretty easy to determine which is which. Hopefully an easy fix! Normally they are, just a matter of finding the problem area.

74 sending wire should be brown, runs up the right frame rail then crosses over near the starter to the engine harness. The ground from the sender to the frame is indeed black.

Thanks !
You are from Memphis area ?
I am live in olive branch , ms
I might have to hire your knowledge !!
Because I am lost already ! Going to start working on it Monday when I get it home .

42 miles north of Mem airport in Brighton.

Where did you find this 74 around here?

Plenty of knowledge on this site, just have to ask.

Been looking for about 4 yrs for a 72 model , but Junkers were $4000-$5000
That would run . I found this 74 is Alabama , about 4 hrs away . It was only 1 1/2,hrs from my in laws house , so we all loaded up and went to look at it .
Had to give guy a check to hold it over night ( we were in car ) then the next day my COOL father n law , let me grab some cash from him , his truck and his flat bed to go get it . It's been at my in laws house for almost 2 weeks !!! I am so ready to get it home !!!!!! Towing home TODAY !!!! He was asking $1700 , I got it for $1500 !!!!

Fantastic, 1500 I would have snagged it too.
First gens are like gold and 2nd gen full verts are on there way.

What are your plans for it?
Take a good look underneath for rust around cab supports and rocker boxes.

He replaced most rusty stuff , Only rust is inside rockers , the rockers under still are good . It needs lots of work , but it does run and drive .
